Aerospace ProjectAt Optics Technology, Inc., it is not only our advanced fabrication equipment, but our skilled craftsmen that set us apart. While automation and precision machining equipment are key to what we do, it is the investment in our people that have allowed us to grow and succeed since 1986. The project highlighted here is a miniature shutter assembly that was fabricated for a customer in the aerospace industry. This precision assembly is constructed from spring steel, music wire, and bronze. Very fine music wire measuring as small as 0.001″ in diameter was used to control the shutter orientation. Dimensional tolerances were held to as tight as ±0.0002″ during fabrication in order to meet the strict performance requirements outlined by the customer during the design phase of the project.

The shutter speed requirements for this project were extremely strict, meaning not only did very tight fabrication tolerances have to be held, but specialized testing procedures had to be developed to verify that all assemblies met the required specifications. CNC milling centers and lathes were used to produce the base components of the assembly. Our machining equipment is custom designed to accommodate close work tolerances and micro-miniature machining of complex components. After machining, components were hand filed under a microscope by highly skilled craftsmen for precision fitment. This complex project was completed with a turnaround time of 16 weeks. As a result of the quality of work on this project, this customer has contacted us for additional partnerships.
