At the beginning stages of the project highlighted here, a customer in the medical industry contacted us regarding the design and manufacturing of an otoscope, which is used to examine a patient’s ear canal. The otoscope shown here measures 2″ in height, 0.5″ in diameter and is constructed of stainless steel and brass. For this assembly, precision components were machined to tolerances as tight as ±0.0002″ using CNC mills and lathes.

This project required not only an extensive amount of knowledge regarding optical components but precision mechanical assembly experience. While some optical specialists focus solely on design aspects of a project, we are able to marry optical design and technology with production scale manufacturing and assembly considerations. Because this product, in particular, is used in a clinical setting, ease of repair was factored into the initial design parameters, minimizing the cost for repair if the instrument is damaged in the field. Resolution target testing was used to verify the performance of the otoscope before the final assemblies were delivered to the customer.

Since this product has entered the market, it has become widely regarded as one of the best otoscopes currently available. We are a key supplier to this customer and continue to work with them on new products and designs.
